Review consensus
Alan Wake 2 is an exceptionally ambitious survival-horror sequel that combines investigative exploration, resource-conscious combat, surreal storytelling, live-action sequences, and striking audiovisual presentation. Critics consistently praised its dual protagonists, richly atmospheric settings, inventive metafictional narrative, and willingness to experiment with the structure of video-game storytelling. The experience is less universally successful as a shooter: combat and boss encounters can feel underwhelming, while the pacing, dense lore, long monologues, technical issues, and deliberately unresolved finale may frustrate some players. Even so, Remedy’s bold vision, memorable set pieces, and unusual multimedia style make it one of the generation’s most distinctive horror games.
