Review consensus
Dark Souls III is a polished, punishing action RPG that combines precise combat, intricate exploration, atmospheric worldbuilding, and some of FromSoftware’s strongest boss encounters. Critics widely praised its interconnected environments, rewarding sense of progression, extensive build variety, and indirect storytelling. Its principal shortcomings are familiar: uneven late-game areas, occasional camera and performance problems, recycled ideas, and a heavy reliance on nostalgia and callbacks to earlier Souls games. Even so, the game’s tense combat, haunting presentation, secrets, and exceptional challenge make it a compelling culmination of the trilogy and one of the most accomplished entries in the genre.
