Review consensus
Final Fantasy VII Remake successfully transforms Midgar into a richly detailed, emotionally engaging setting while expanding the original’s supporting cast and political themes. Its hybrid action-RPG combat is fast, strategic, and especially rewarding when switching between characters and exploiting enemy weaknesses. The soundtrack, performances, presentation, and cinematic set pieces are major strengths. However, the game’s linear structure, uneven side content, occasional environmental roughness, and controversial story changes keep it from being a flawless remake. Most importantly, it covers only the Midgar portion of the original, though the expanded material gives this first chapter a substantial identity of its own.
