Review consensus

Critics found the original 2010 release of Final Fantasy XIV Online to be a deeply flawed MMORPG undermined by poor usability and a lack of engaging content. Its strongest qualities were an impressive graphical engine, atmospheric music, an appealing Final Fantasy setting, and a flexible class system that allowed players to switch disciplines freely. However, confusing navigation, an obstructive interface, repetitive missions, weak communication tools, sluggish combat, and tedious crafting made the game feel more like work than adventure. The world showed potential, but limited quest variety and aimless progression prevented that potential from becoming a satisfying online role-playing experience.
