Review consensus
God of War: Sons of Sparta is an ambitious 2D Metroidvania that successfully reinterprets the series through Kratos’ youth, pairing a heartfelt relationship with Deimos with attractive pixel art, strong voice acting, and a fitting Bear McCreary score. Its combat and exploration become substantially better after new abilities, gear, and upgrades accumulate, while the interconnected map offers satisfying revisitation. However, the opening hours are slow, combat can feel repetitive and floaty, and the game struggles to distinguish itself from stronger entries in the genre. Technical roughness, late fast travel, and post-game-only co-op further limit an otherwise worthwhile spin-off.
