Review consensus

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a polished and content-rich musou game that successfully expands the ancient-Hyrule story glimpsed in Tears of the Kingdom. Its strongest elements are the satisfying, deeper combat system, varied playable roster, excellent technical performance, and Zelda-focused presentation. Zelda, Mineru, Calamo, and the other characters bring welcome mechanical variety, while Sync Strikes and Zonai-inspired abilities add meaningful texture to the usual horde-clearing formula. However, the narrative can feel predictable for Tears of the Kingdom players, and the battlefield layouts are frequently linear, repetitive, and underwhelming. Even so, it is a strong series entry and an appealing canon companion to Tears of the Kingdom.
