Review consensus

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a strong but uneven evolution of Ubisoft’s open-world formula. Naoe’s stealth, parkour, light-based infiltration, and flexible assassination tools provide some of the series’ best moment-to-moment gameplay, while Yasuke offers weighty combat and a useful contrast. The beautifully realized feudal-Japan setting, changing seasons, varied landscapes, and improved combat are consistent highlights. However, the dual-protagonist structure weakens narrative cohesion, Yasuke’s sections can feel mechanically limited, and the lengthy target-hunting middle act becomes repetitive and directionless. Despite an underwhelming conclusion, Shadows remains a polished, atmospheric, and highly enjoyable Assassin’s Creed adventure.
