Review consensus

Borderlands 4 delivers an exceptionally satisfying looter-shooter core, combining punchy gunplay, wildly varied weapons, deeper Vault Hunter builds, and a more open structure that makes Kairos enjoyable to roam. Its movement options and co-op-friendly combat add welcome energy, while the constant stream of gear gives the campaign a compelling reward loop. However, the story, antagonist, and supporting cast are underwritten, and the humor often feels forced or overly self-conscious. Level scaling and bullet-sponge encounters can also frustrate, while PC performance issues undermine the launch experience. It is mechanically strong and highly replayable, but narratively and technically uneven.
