Review consensus
Horizon Forbidden West is a lavish and expansive sequel that improves on Zero Dawn through a more varied world, stronger side quests, richer combat, and a much broader range of machines, weapons, and activities. Critics consistently praised its spectacular environments, technical presentation, compelling exploration, and more developed supporting cast. Its weaknesses are mostly inherited from the original: climbing can feel inconsistent, human-enemy AI remains underwhelming, crafting generates too much inventory clutter, and the narrative sometimes overexplains its mysteries. Even without radically reinventing the formula, it delivers a polished, content-rich open-world adventure with memorable encounters and substantial visual spectacle.
