Review consensus
Overwatch 2 preserves the series’ strongest qualities: expressive heroes, polished presentation, tense team fights, and a satisfying new 5v5 format supported by the Push mode. The new and reworked characters add meaningful tactical variety, while faster matches make individual decisions feel more consequential. However, critics largely viewed it as an update rather than a full sequel, particularly because PvE was absent at launch. The free-to-play transition also drew criticism for its battle pass, hero-unlocking requirements, launch connectivity problems, and monetization, which many felt weakened the original game’s welcoming spirit and distinctive identity.
