Review consensus
Unicorn Overlord is a richly crafted strategy RPG whose greatest strength is the depth and flexibility of its army-building systems. Unit composition, positioning, equipment, programmed tactics, terrain, and battlefield objectives combine into consistently rewarding tactical puzzles, while the broad overworld and steady stream of classes and recruits make experimentation unusually compelling. Vanillaware’s hand-drawn art, animation, and music are outstanding across every platform. The main weakness is its conventional fantasy narrative, with a predictable central plot and comparatively flat protagonist, though the large supporting cast provides charm. Overall, it is an exceptionally polished and engrossing tactical adventure.
