Review consensus

Counter-Strike established a remarkably durable competitive-shooter formula through precise gunplay, objective-based rounds, economical weapon purchases, and teamwork that remains tense even while spectating after death. Its maps and sound design reward communication, patience, positioning, and mechanical skill rather than run-and-gun aggression. The trade-offs are substantial: the original release is almost entirely multiplayer, offers little onboarding, has a steep learning curve, and can expose newcomers to cheating, toxicity, and veteran players with overwhelming experience. It is best suited to players who enjoy disciplined team competition, and comparable games include Rainbow Six, Team Fortress Classic, and Unreal Tournament.
