Review consensus
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake successfully modernizes a celebrated Japanese horror classic without losing its oppressive atmosphere. The rebuilt Minakami Village, enhanced lighting, audio, and expanded story content make exploration more immersive, while the Camera Obscura remains an inventive and tense combat system. However, the remake preserves some dated design habits, and its camera-based battles can still feel clumsy, especially when aggravated wraiths regenerate health. Stealth sequences are also weakened by trial-and-error encounters. Despite those frustrations, the remake delivers consistently frightening set pieces, strong audiovisual presentation, and a compelling new entry point for newcomers to Fatal Frame.
