Review consensus
South of Midnight is an atmospheric, story-focused action-adventure whose strongest qualities are its expressive characters, distinctive stop-motion-inspired art direction, Southern Gothic setting, folklore-driven worldbuilding, and exceptional music. Critics consistently found Hazel’s journey emotionally resonant and the Deep South setting unusually well realized. Its gameplay is competent but less memorable: combat can feel underpowered or uneven, traversal is generally satisfying, and the chapter structure repeatedly returns to a predictable explore-fight-boss loop. Pacing and narrative segmentation also undermine the momentum, while the final confrontation disappoints compared with earlier encounters. Even so, the game’s ambition, sense of place, and heartfelt storytelling make it a worthwhile, characterful adventure.
