Review consensus
Super Mario Odyssey is a vibrant, inventive return to the open-ended 3D exploration of Super Mario 64, elevated by Cappy’s capture mechanic and exceptionally dense Kingdom design. Critics consistently praised the game’s responsive movement, varied Power Moon objectives, imaginative transformations, polished presentation, memorable music, and generous post-game content. Its main drawbacks are relatively light challenge during parts of the campaign, some repetitive or easily obtained Moons, and motion controls that can feel awkward, especially in handheld play. Even with those caveats, Odyssey’s joyful experimentation, constant surprises, and refined platforming make it one of Nintendo’s strongest 3D adventures.
